Yesterday, the fish importers and wholesalers have agreed to follow the new rule set by the authority which requires them to use the new insulated fish box. You can read the rest of the news here.
When the issue appeared (again) on the news, I was so worried that I bought quite a number of fish and stock up my fridge. The importers said they will boycott the new ruling and that will surely push up the fish price.
For those who didn’t read or follow the local news, here’s the brief comparison between the new and current fish box pricing:
| Price (MYR) | Govt Subsidy (MYR) | New Price (MYR) | |
| New Fish Box (100 kg) | 205.00 | 50.00 | 155.00 |
| Old Fish Box (100 kg) | 135.00 | - | 135.00 |
| Difference | 70.00 | 20.00 |
| Price (MYR) | Govt Subsidy (MYR) | New Price (MYR) | |
| New Fish Box (50 kg) | 135.00 | 30.00 | 105.00 |
| Old Fish Box (50 kg) | 85.00 | - | 85.00 |
| Difference | 50.00 | 20.00 |
Government said the new boxes are better in the scope of retaining the freshness of the fish.
My Expectations
- There will be no or only slight increase in fish price.
- My family and I can enjoy fish with better quality and freshness from now on.
- No more fights between any parties which can make food price fluctuate. But, it’s totally ok to fight for lowering the price
