Then, I lost my camera which I used to take pictures for this blog. Actually, it’s my wife’s camera. Anyway, we thought someone stole it. My wife asked me to lodge a police report. Luckily I found it back under the sofa before make any unnecessary moves.

This recipe is quite special to me as it reminds me of my mother. During my childhood years, she always cooks this dish for our family and now, I’m doing the same for my family.

I always thought that I need to strictly follow the recipe in order to produce the similar sweet sour fish as my mother used to cook. Actually, it is more fun if we take it easy and enjoy while cooking in the kitchen. The important thing is, you have to love what you are doing.

So, let’s have a look at today’s recipe: Oriental Sweet Sour Fish. And as usual, my style!

Ingredients

Seabass

Turmeric powder

Salt & Pepper

Diced Garlic

Diced Shallot

Chili Paste

Chili Sauce

Tomato Sauce

Plum Sauce

Sugar

4-angle bean

Onion

Thyme

Cucumber

Looks like we need lots of ingredients for today’s recipe aye? No worries. I promise this one will be easier than pulling this kind of stunt:

Let’s Start Cooking!

Season the seabass with turmeric powder, salt & pepper and fry it. Set aside.

In a medium hot pan, put in the garlic and shallot. Brown them a bit and quickly add in the chili paste. Stir until the paste turn a bit dry.

Add in the rest of the ingredients excluding cucumber. Stir to the preferred consistency.

In a serving plate, arrange the sliced cucumber around and place the fried seabass in the middle. Pour the sauce on top of the fish.

Did I tell you this one is easy?

Stir-fried beef with oyster sauce – from lost5kilos.com, it shows that eating high calorie food moderately is still ok if you want to lose weight. Based on the recipe, I discard the wine and oyster sauce.

Making Chinese stir fry beef – yet another recipe from a ‘diet blog’, just like the previous one above. This is a short video on how to cook Chinese stir-fry beef.

Based on these blogs/websites, I simplified the recipes and came out with my own recipe; Simple Black Pepper Beef.

Ingredients

Beef

Garlic

Shallot

Carrot

Four-angle Bean

Light Soy Sauce

Salt & Pepper

Let’s Start Cooking!

Cut the beef across the grain into a small pieces. Season it with salt & pepper.

Heat up your wok on high heat before putting in the cooking oil. Use about 2 tbsp for now as the beef will release its fat.

Toss in the beef and cook it under high heat. Keep stirring to avoid burning.

Once the beef’s fat dries out, pour in another tbsp of oil. Throw in the garlic and shallot. Stir until fragrant.

Add the light soy sauce, carrot and four-angle bean. Keep stirring until the sauce reduced a bit.

Correct seasoning and serve.

You can substitute the carrot and four-angle bean with your favourite vegetable. I used them because it happens to be in my refrigerator.

Happy cooking my friends!

Actually, that was my second visit to this cafe. Last time, I ordered something Eastern and it turned out to be a not-so-good one. I don’t mean to ‘Sit in a basket and lift myself up (masuk bakul, angkat sendiri)’, but honestly, I can cook better than that.

As a positive and open-minded person, I said to myself:

Just give them another chance.

So, I ordered something Western; Rib-eye steak. My wife tried the Fish and Chips. My expectation is very low, and all I can say is the steak is still under my ‘low expectation’ level. It’s dry, overcooked, not tender as it should be and the sauce is so-so.

Guess what they serve with Fish and Chips? Black pepper sauce! I never tried this combination before, so I just give it a go. And it just don’t go together.

My review for fish and chips with black pepper sauce:

It’s a no-no.

At least for my wife and me.
